On Thursday, the Consumer Council filed a public interest proposal in the Regulatory Commission against the proposal to charge Rs 10 for alert messages on prepaid electricity connections and Rs 50 for reconnecting the connection. The council demanded that the proposal regarding disconnection and reconnection of connections should be rejected immediately because it is against the rules.

A proposal has been made by the Power Corporation to the Regulatory Commission that after installation of smart prepaid meters, if the consumers run out of balance, they will be charged Rs. 10 for sending an alert message and Rs. 50 for reconnecting the connection.

In protest against this proposal, the President of the Consumer Council, Awadhesh Kumar Verma, filed a public interest proposal in the Electricity Regulatory Commission. It also said that no burden of about Rs 29619 crore spent on smart prepaid meters should be put on consumers.

The central government has already given orders in this regard. The council president demanded a high-level investigation into the matter from the tender process of smart prepaid meters to GTP approval.
